Viatitude Health Ltd is a London/ UK based start-up that was founded on a deep passion for brain health. The founder Martina herself had experienced gradual drastic loss of cognitive function due to a neurodegenerative autoimmune condition. She eventually returned to life and full cognitive function with nutrition and lifestyle interventions alone.
At the time of her diagnosis, no pharmaceutical option was made available to her. Therefore Martina had no choice but to figure it out herself through reading, researching and endless trials & errors. After 15 years her cognitive function had gradually returned, when she realised that a new medical discipline had emerged: ‘Functional Medicine’. Functional Medicine is a field in medicine that is dedicated to reinstating and maintaining full human function merely with interventions that the human body is naturally optimised for - i.e. nutrition and lifestyle.
Martina gained an MSc (CNELM) in the field of Personalised Nutrition/ Functional Medicine with specific focus on brain health and Alzheimer’s Disease prevention, to understand her own illness and return to life, as well as the broader role of nutrition and lifestyle in brain health. Making this knowledge available and actionable more widely is what Viatitude Health is all about.
Viatitude Health Ltd has gained advance assurance for the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) by HMRC.
Clients of the 'Viatitude Health Nutrition & Lifestyle Brain MOT’ are mostly professionals in their mid-life who feel fit and healthy but who wonder if and how their brain energy, brain clarity and performance could be improved in the short term, as well as for the long term. There is no age limit either way - no one is ever too young or too old to treat their brain with constructive kindness.
The health of the human brain is impacted by many factors such as the food we eat, the nutrients we metabolise, the microbes in our gut, the air we breathe, our blood pressure, our age, our metabolism, our gender, our genes, our thoughts and choices, our ethnicity; essentially the entire world we live in. Some of these factors we cannot change - but several factors impacting brain health in the short- and long-term (as well as impacting the risk for developing Alzheimer's Disease) have been found to be modifiable. Please see here an amalgamated (yet unlikely to ever be an exhaustive) list of modifiable risk factors for brain health, in no specific order:

The Institute of Functional Medicine defines Functional Medicine as follows: Functional Medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness. A diagnosis can be the result of more than one cause. For example, depression can be caused by many different factors, including inflammation. Likewise, a cause such as inflammation may lead to a number of different diagnoses, including depression. The precise manifestation of each cause depends on the individual’s genes, environment, and lifestyle, and only treatments that address the right cause will have lasting benefit beyond symptom suppression.
The Functional Medicine approach can be applied to a wide range of scenarios: to a person feeling fit and healthy wanting to maintain or optimise that state of health, as well as to a person showing specific symptoms of disease. A patient showing symptoms of acute illness or injury who requires time-critical emergency treatment will most likely be treated with a Conventional Medicine approach, such as surgery or emergency medication. A patient with a chronic condition however might chose to take the Functional Medicine approach, which is to reinstate and maintain function of the human brain and body by nutrition- and lifestyle-focussed means.
To clarify the difference between Functional vs Conventional Medicine: A consultation in both approaches begins with the symptoms that the patient presents with. Following a Conventional Medicine approach, the patient’s symptoms are investigated and managed with pharmaceutical interventions. Following a Functional Medicine approach, the symptoms are taken as the starting point of the investigation process to identify and eradicate the root cause of that symptom. This investigation might look back over the patient's entire life and might include a broad range of aspects of their life. The symptom-free life of that patient will likely feature a somewhat altered nutrition- and lifestyle-protocol – i.e. those substances and molecules that likely have caused the adverse reactions/ symptoms of disease will be avoided and likely nutrient deficiencies are replenished.
The reasons why the Functional Medicine approach has not replaced the Conventional Medicine approach - despite the incredibly encouraging results especially in the field of chronic health conditions and specifically Alzheimer’s Disease - are very much multi-factorial:
On the one hand the Functional Medicine approach is much more time-intense and therefore more expensive than the Conventional approach and would over-burden health care systems. Also, most medical professionals are entirely Conventionally trained and are not even familiar with the Functional approach – and might likely even be dismissive of it – which is why Functional care could realistically at this stage not even be delivered at scale.
On the other hand, the wider population is still expecting modern medical treatment to be pharmaceutical (i.e. people following the 'A-Pill-for-An-Ill Approach') and are unlikely to understand or agree with the Functional Medicine approach.
Furthermore, the Functional Medicine approach requires the patient/ client to be involved and take some interest in and responsibility for their own health. This might be somewhat overwhelming for some people/ patients and is not required - or even encouraged - in Conventional Medicine.
And finally, the great financial interests in the Conventional Medicine model will unlikely enable a shift towards the Functional Medicine model any time soon.
